  • 1.  Eating heart healthy when you don't have energy to cook

    Posted 11-15-2020 09:38
    Hello everyone,
Because of my severe heart disease and bad back and problems with my hands I have hard time cooking. Often I just too fatigued to cook. I try to buy heart healthy convenience food, but that can be hard.  I also really need to eat more vegies.

    Any suggestions? Thanks, Janis

    Hello Janis,
My wife and I but a lot of salads from the market that is pre-packaged. I know you have seen them and many of them are quite good. We also buy imitation crab and just microwave it with salt-free butter and lemon juice. It is inexpensive and we like it.
We have also found out that many of the meals from Denny's restaurants are heart-healthy. The staff will cook the food without added salt upon request. We often eat there and they are very good about leaving things out or adding different seasoning. I do not know if you have Lazy Dog restaurants near you. They make up good meals that are frozen like TV dinners.
We have found many restaurants will cook to-go meals to order so we will often buy a couple at a time and have the extra in the fridge for the next day or two. We have learned that if we explain we want salt free meals or of no-salt butter used and want to substitute vegetables for french fries that almost every restaurant is happy to comply. Sometimes we have to pay a little extra but most time not.
We also buy vegetables that are precut and washed like carrots and celery and use them with hummus or avocado for snacks.
I hope this helps. I know it seems simple but I never thought about this kind of thing until I needed to as well.

    Dear Janis,

??I have a V-8 juice every day. It is the equivalent of either one or
two servings of vegetables. I buy the cans, not the bottle, no reason,
except that it is easier. No fuss and it tastes good. I never was a big
vegetable eater and this solves my problem.

Sadly, I can't drink V8. It would give reflux. Isn't very high in sodium? I on a low sodium diet.
