  • 1.  Masks with a message

    Hello all,

    For the first time since the stay at home orders (10+ weeks ago) my wife allowed me to accompany her on a grocery trip.  We both had on masks, and even gloves, but noticed that some of the customers and even employees did not. My wife wondered if a mask that said, something like, "I am wearing a mask because I have Coronary Artery Disease" might help others understand the value/import of masks.  Your thoughts?  Is there a mask like this already out there?

    Hi David. I am a high risk patient as well as my wife. We are both diabetic, and I am having my  one year bypass anniversary tomorrow. Unfortunately I don't think that the younger crowd, the ones with uncompromised immune systems, are concerned with The high risk individuals. Not to be negative, but for example we went to pick up some food in town and one of the customers inside didn't have a mask or gloves on and it upset my wife. In the same establishment one of the employees didn't have gloves on. I think this is just going to be an adjustment period until we get used to whatever is coming next. I have checked on the internet, and there are no masks like that, as far as I have seen.

    I am a survivor of  20 year old 5 bypasses, 6 heart attacks (18 Feb 20 was my last one,10 stents, all genetically caused.  My pacemaker/defibrillator was installed on 30 Jan 20 to help with my now congestive heart failure and cardiomyopathy.  I, too, am amazed at the number of young and older folks who go into grocery and any other store without wearing a face mask, don't pay attention to the distance separation, one way lines in stores, and general disregard for we older and medically vulnerable!  I was fortunate to purchase a N-95 mask several years ago to do some dry wall sanding, but never did it.  While a good mask, I find it difficult to breath through.  The elastic has already broken in spots, but it still works.  I tried to buy masks in Lowes, but was told they redirected all masks to the health care providers.  Good for them but bad for we people who need some also.

    David,

    I don't know if any such mask, but I think you've hit upon an incredible idea.  Why don't you take the initiative of having some made and then advertising them, maybe on Instagram or Etsy.  While you're at it, make some for diabetics and cancer patients.  You're in a position to start a whole new product line and maybe make a lot of money.  Go for it, brother.

    As to your underlying point, you are right.  Too many younger people think they are immortal, even though, if you believe the statistics, nearly half of them are obese, have undiagnosed hypertension, diabetes or heart disease and one day, maybe tomorrow or in twenty years, will realize that they're no damn different than us.  It's why you read so many news stories where the wife or kid reports to the press "but he got so sick and died/almost died/was on a ventilator for a month and he's only 40 years old with no preexisting conditions."  My reaction is, "Really?  Of course he doesn't.  But he sure seems to be carrying a gut in the photo."

    The hell with these ignoramuses, make your message masks and put me on your contact/customer list.  I'm ordering a dozen from you right now.

    David, here's one more idea.  Make a mask with one of my favorite movie quotes (King: Skull Island):  "This is a good group of boys. We're all gonna die together out here. You're a good group of boys to die with, I'll tell you that much."

    Just make sure you consult with an intellectual property lawyer before you use that one.  You probably will need a license or royalty agreement with the movie company.

    Hello David

    We are still wearing masks in stores but many people are
    also not wearing masks even when the signs ask them too

    We have had clerks accosted or attacked for trying to 
    maintain a mask environment in the stores, and now after a
    few weeks, it has almost become a matter of personal preference  
    if a person masks or does not mask.  

    I still wear a mask but do not want to draw attention to my
    myself or my physical limitations any more then it needs to be. 
    I do all my grocery shopping early in the morning or later at
    night when the crowds and younger people may still be at home.
