    Hi all,

Now that heart month is over and we have all had some time to reflect and recoup. What did you do during heart month to spread awareness? Did your local chapter or group have special events? We would love to share with our larger Mended Hearts community the activities that went on that we may have missed.

    Share with me!

How did I share the message about heart disease...

Well, I decided to throw a party at my home and invited some First Responders. Many in the neighborhood showed up though most likely because they saw paramedic and police vehicles in the driveway, pretty sure we didn't send out invites. Anyway, we started the party with a demonstration of EKG's and played 50 questions where I explained in detail about my heart disease. The Paramedics were a bit confused and had difficulty reading the EKG they performed until I explained I have a CRT-D and am paced 100%.

After running out of seemingly endless questions, we decided to go for a ride in their shiny box truck complete with bed, flashing lights and siren that operated at 85 decibels, wakes the dead. Now let me tell you, Richard Petty and Danica Patrick have nothing on those guys. They hit turbo mode and we raced across town through traffic lights and screeching around corners on two wheels. To complete the demonstration, they raced up to the entrance to a local hospital and a team wheeled me through the double doors into the ER. As we crossed the threshold my escorts threw their hands up in victory. The days festivities were concluded with participation by those funny guys in white coats showing their skill in repeating the same questions the First Responders pumped me with.

There you have it, how I spread the news. Now I ask you, is there a better way we can one share the news with friends and neighbors? Certainly got their attention...

Our chapter 294 in Aiken, SC promoted Heart Month by getting the Aiken City Council to offer a proclamation declaring February as "Heart Month".  We have initiated this action for several years and the resulting public exposure has a positive impact on our community.  Eighteen of our members usher one night of the five performances of the annual "Heart Board Show" a major fund raiser of the HEART BOARD for several decades that has raised over two million dollars for heart research.  That organization is separate and independent of of our Mended Hearts Chapter but the exposure we get wearing our mended heart jerseys and greeting over 600 attendees brings a broader awareness of cardiovascular health to Aiken.
