I had a 3X bypass in Aug 2007. The intubation tube went after I was “under” the anesthesia. The first thing I saw/heard in recovery was when they took the tube out, so the tube never bothered me.
I’ll suggest an important item to consider after surgery would be your commitment to an improved diet, a regular exercise program and most importantly, taking all the rehab you can get - as early as the doctor will release you to rehab. Normal is 12 weeks, 3 times per week.
I didn’t know any better in ‘07, and only took 8 sessions. I believe that extended my total recovery by one to two months.
Good luck-we’ll all be thinking of you and wishing you the best outcome ever!! You will be happy to have had it done.

    I agree, Joe!

    Hey Mary,
For some odd reason, thevfrim section is showing my husband's name instead of me, Virginia. Anyway, this is Virginia.
It is normal to fear the unknown so here is a funny story about my breathing tube. When I awoke from surgery (CABGx4 at age 48) the first thing I said was, "Thank you Jesus." That's when I realized that I had that breathing tube connected. I looked at the foot of my bed and there stood my handsome husband. I wanted to say, "I love you" to him and so I reached up to remove the tube. The nurse caught my hand and said for me to not try to remove it. I then said to my Hubby, "I love you," as best I could.  Then I responded to the nurse by saying,  "I was going to put it back. I just wanted to say I love you to my Hubby." Everyone in the room chuckled and then I went to sleep. I remember waking up the next day and my breathing tube was gone. Don't fret. While everyone is different, the tubes will be gone in no time and you will be ready for cardiac rehab.  Be encouraged. I'm holding you closely in my thoughts and prayers.

    Blessings,
    Virginia

    Hello Mary,
My husband had a bypass in August of 2010. It was totally unexpected. He thought that he had a rotator cuff injury. He had several complications, BUT and it is an important but, he follows the doctor's orders .His cardiologist calls my husband his model patient. Bob, my husband, still goes to cardiac rehab 3X a week. He knows that he will not walk for 20 minutes or even a few minutes each day, but he does enjoy rehab. It is almost 8 years since his surgery and he is doing great. Cardiac rehab has become a social thing.
One thing no one has brought up. After surgery in the ICU, my daughter noticed that my husband had tape on his eyes. We asked the nurse to remove it. Had he awoken and could not see, he would have panicked. I know that it is done for the surgery, but I do not know if it was supposed to be removed before he went to the ICU.
Bob went from being totally depressed to becoming the president of our local Mended Hearts.
