Important announcement for all ascending aortic aneurysms (Bentall) patients:

FDA approves Edwards Lifesciences' ready-to-implant aortic valved conduit

Edwards Lifesciences (NYSE:EW)  announced today that FDA has approved its Konect Resilia aortic valved conduit (AVC).

Edwards describes the Konect Resilia as the first ready-to-implant option for bio-Bentall procedures, a complex surgery that involves the replacement of a person's aortic valve, aortic root and the ascending aorta.

Surgeons find themselves having to perform nearly a third of Bentall procedures in an emergency setting.

"Until now, surgeons did not have a pre-assembled option that was FDA approved, so those utilizing bovine tissue valves for Bentall procedures needed to manually assemble a valve with a conduit in the operating room," said Dr. Joseph Bavaria, surgery professor and vice chief of the division of cardiovascular surgery at the University of Pennsylvania.

Thanks for posting, Vic. I wonder if it shortens the time of the procedure. Mine done the old fashioned-way (on the HL machine) took about an hour, with another 10 mins or so for a CABG. I'm surprised a third of these are emergencies. I'm guessing dissections?

    Herb,
Yes the device should reduce time of surgery and simplify it for less experienced surgeons. (CC excepted)
I think the stats are overblown but still significant.  I think I was in cardiac arrest for 20 minutes and on HL machine for about an hour.   My wife said it only changed my personality for 6 months before I returned to annoying her again.

Lol. Facing ascending aorta replacement  in September. Humor helps. I've decided if I settle on bovine valve, I shall dress as a cow for Halloween.

    Tammy,
A sense of humor is more important after the surgery, during your recovery.  I believe that confidence in your cardiologist, a experienced cardiac surgeon and a recognized medical center should provide you with assurance before the surgery. So many others have had this procedure successfully that you should gain confidence. Speak to others who have had ascending aortic aneurysm surgery to plan your first month in recovery at home, diet, exercise and cardiac rehab.
    Sincere good luck.

Tammy that’s the attitude you need going in. Humor was the first thing that recovered for me in the ICU post bio-Bentall procedure.
