I am undergoing chemo treatments for a gastric cancer and I have a mechanical aortic valve. During a recent series of treatments, I was surprised to see that my INR had risen to over 7, while taking my routine dose of warfarin. My nurse thinks it is due to steroids that are administered during treatments. Neither the cardiologist or oncologist had warned me. I am able to adjust my warfarin use and avoid this problem with a home test kit. Patients need to be aware of this potential problem.
