Hello I just signed on as a member of Mended Hearts. I am a (46 yr old) female living in Houston Texas. I was diagnosed with Pheochromocytoma (a vascular tumor of the adrenal gland) which led to Congestive Heart Failure, Tachychardia, Cardiomyopathy and DVT in 2011 and is currently getting ongoing treatment for these issues. I am presently still having health issues (Afib/Aflutter - heart rate sometimes at 180 -260), Pneumonia - (Pleurisy - (twice in 3 months) and overall just not feeling well. I've had (4) ablations over the years and I do have in a pacemaker (St. Jude) my first was (Medtronics). My question is, I have explained to my EP about the hot flashes and excessive and frequent palpitations within the last few weeks. I did not get a definitive answer on what may be causing the palpitations but they increased my meds  (propeferone (Rythmol) for heart related issues from 225mg 3 * daily to 325mg 3* daily. Which is not good because of the crazy side effects. Am thinking it may be peremenopause because of age, and the hot flashes (the mood swings are a given lol). Is anyone else experiencing these issues along with having heart issues and how do you handle them. i find myself praying that my heart don't stop because it may be too tired after all the health issues and different meds from over the years. I am on xarelto for (DVT) as well. I still work but I am extremely exhausted most of the time. Hopefully I can hear back about other's experiences and what can I do to help myself. Sorry for the long post.  Thank you

I would like to suggest an essential oil called Ylang Ylang.  Put this on your wrists and forearms a few times a day.  This drastically reduced my hot flashes.  Give it at least a day of multiple applications.  You should feel a difference.

    Dear Ilna,
I'm sorry to hear of your symptoms.  I too experienced increased palpitations when I hit perimenopause at about 47.  The cardiologist gave me a beta blocker to control the Atrial Flutter. Due to my past surgical repair as a child for Tetralogy Fallot, they watch closely for late onset life threatening arrhythmias.  But, I also was seen by the PCP and GYN as I was experiencing heavy bleeding with my crazy menstrual cycle and became anemic.  I learned that anemia can affect our hearts too as there aren't enough red blood cells to carry oxygen so the heart has to work harder and thus can have an increase in arrhythmias.  It's five years later and I take 100 ml of Metoprolol and an iron supplement that have decreased my atrial flutter and I am keeping my fingers crossed that my mensural cycles & hot flashes are almost over!  I was cleared for a  vaginal hysterectomy, but symptoms seem to be decreasing, so I am holding off for now.  Menopause is frustrating anyway but then when you add in its affect on other serious health issues, it becomes even more challenging.  I hope you can find the relief that you need while caring for your heart.
