    Robin,

Your Aortic Dissection intervention was unfortunate but you were lucky to have it discovered and prevented. You had no family to have to act as your advocate. I have had the same exact surgery and am very lucky to be alive as you are. But to "STICK YOUR HEAD IN THE SAND" because you need to hear the reality of the situation which is mostly positive is totally foolish. If you do not go under a doctor's care for next 5 to 10 years you maybe lucky and survive. Yet may also suffer the consequences of " I am man and do not need this" attitude will probably get you a fate that you not recover from. I have had 3 open heart surgery in 11 months. I have two incesions in the front and one in the back. Yes the back.  I am 10 years out from surgery. Hopefully you will survive that long.

Hospital mortality rate for treated patients is about 30% for proximal dissection and 10% for distal. For treated patients who survive the acute episode, survival rate is about 60% at 5 years and 40% at 10 years.

I am not going to sugar coat this either you go to doctor and follow their advice or you will not be giving yourself the best possible chance of survival. Get you affairs in order because your family will need to handle all the financial matters because you, in post op were pissed off that you did not take your health seriously enough to ask the doctors what happened. You were given a "post op" plan which you threw away. Dumb!

Good luck...because you are going to need it.

    Robin,

I think you ought to print out Michael's advice, tape it to your bathroom mirror and save it as your phone and laptop screensaver because, other than your cardiologist's advice (when you get one), Michael's tough love advice is the best advice you're ever going to get in your life.  You might want to thank him for that because heeding his advice is what may keep you alive.

    Good luck,

    Ira

    Robin,
I understand the burden of care you have with your parents and thank you for telling me about what you face every day in trying to keep them safe and at home. I commend you.  But I'm also worried about YOU.   Others have pointed out the seriousness of what has happened to you and urged you get another doctor and get connected to care.  I certainly agree.  Stay in touch, we care.
    Wishing you well

    Robin,

Just to underscore Doris' comment, the surest way to keep your parents safe is for you to take proper care of yourself.  We are not just individual egos doing our own thing.  We are instead interwoven patterns in the fabric of spacetime and everything we do and are has an effect on everything else.  Your parents will I think agree with this.

Help yourself and help your parents.

Robin ~ Not sure why your original post isn't showing up but I found it under a reply so I'll try to respond.

Your question ie did you have open heart surgery is simple repair of an aortic dissection can be done by two methods...trans catheter where the insert a catheter into an artery in the leg to perform repairs using stents or open heart surgery. You'll know you had open heart surgery if you have that cute scar running from below the neck down to the bottom of the rib cage.

That said, in reading your post I can't help believe theres far more than is obvious. Seems to me you had a terrible experience and are still angry and bitter in spite of results. Believe me I can relate. I had a horrible experience and was furious with both the surgeon and the hospital and still hold ill feelings 6 years later. If I'm right, you've got to sort things out and let it go. No faith in your doctor, change doctors and akso please get professional help from a counselor like  psychiatrist to help. There is no shame in that and you need to do what you can to move on.

    Good luck to you.

I really think the way they've set Q & A up here leaves a lot to be desired. In reading replies and looking at time stamps on this thread, it's clear we are responding to different posts. That or I need to get my drug dosages upped. 🤦‍♂️
