    Hi my name is Rasheed,
I am 52 yrs old and just had a quadruple bypass surgery April 1 2021. I didn't know I had a heart attack until after 3 weeks when I show up for an EKG. I exercise regularly, eat well , 200lb and in good shape , I had high blood pressure since 2003 but didn't had any other conditions apart from Stress of running my own businesses. I am home recovering and so far so good, I want to connect to other active people around my age that is going through the same situation and just to know how they coping and how do they deal with their day to day both physically and mentally.#
    thanks

    Good Evening Rasheed!

I'm sorry too hear about your heart challenges. I had bypass surgery (2x) just under two years ago at the age of 56. I suffered from symptoms my entire life from my congenital heart defect that was diagnosed later in life. I've been athletic my entire life and am an avid runner. Though I'm grateful for the diagnosis and the surgery, recovery has been slow and frustrating. I've just recently been given the green light to return to my per-surgery exercise routine.

My advice to you as an athlete is give yourself time to recover. Be patient. Like me, you will want to return to your per-surgery routine, but listen to your doctors instructions and hope you are planning to complete cardiac rehab. Chance are, unlike me, your fitness will help in your recovery. I was a bit different, as my heart adversely reacted to post surgery meds and stopped beating 14 times.

Hang in there and know, there are other athletes out here dealing with the same struggles you are.

    All the best.

    Barry and Rasheed,

I'm a little older than you guys, about to turn 71 and 67 1/2 when I had a heart attack followed by quintuple bypass surgery, pneumonia complications thanks to the ventilator and 2 weeks in a medically induced coma.  I'm also a lifetime athlete and I'm here to tell you that my old ass was back in the gym 2 months after I was released from the hospital, running a month later and the only reason I am now retired from running is because of sciatica caused by a sloppy deadlift at the gym.  I still can lift, though, and lift heavy, although my Olympic style lifting days are over.  I also walk and bike.

I was pretty much back to normal a year after surgery and I'm fitter now than before surgery (although not anywhere close to what I was in my 20's to 50's, but that's more about being a geezer than anything heart related).  Bottom line, if I can do it at my advanced age, there's no reason that you young gents can't also be all that you can be.

Happy trails, or as we used to say, see you on the road.

    Ira

Ira way to go; you just kick my butt and I am shelving all my doubts.
Thank you so much for your inspiration.

Had a 4x at age 50, out of the blue came a quad bypass. Had type 2 diabetes and didn't know it.

I was a walker averaging 15-20 miles a week presurgery.

The best advice I can give is pull your big boy pants on and walk, walk, walk. When you're done walking rest then walk some more.

I was driving again 12 days post surgery, went back to work a week after surgery (own our business).

Get your hormones checked, low testosterone is not good for the heart.
