  • 1.  ASD and VSD repair

    Posted 02-10-2020 10:16
    Hello
My daughter was born with a large VSD and a small ASD . She had both repaired when she was 7 months old. She still has a small leak around the VSD patch and a slight regurgitation of the valve. She is now 22 and not showing any complications. I was wondering if anyone who was born with these defects experienced complications as adults. She sees her cardiologist regularly but I worry about childbirth and complications as an adult with her.

    Hello Peggy,

I just noticed that it appears nobody responded to your post.  I'm sorry.  Even though this is very late, I thought you might want to hear from someone.  I am glad your daughter was doing well when you posted and I hope she is still doing well.  I was born with Tetralogy of Fallot which involves 4 heart defects, including VSD and Pulmonary valve stenosis.  I had life saving surgery as a baby and then total repair surgery at 6 years old.  I am now 57 years old and still doing well!  I was able to participate in dance, roller skating lessons, and cheerleading activities while growing up.  I was followed by high risk OB/GYN doctors when I was pregnant.  I am happy to report that both of my pregnancies were without complications and I delivered my babies naturally.  Thankfully they were both healthy and are now adults.  Around the time I turned 50, I began to notice heart flutters and testing revealed a heart arrhythmia.  However, so far, it has been controlled with medication - Metoprolol.  I have had some regurgitation of my pulmonary valve which was a side effect of surgery to open up my valve.  My cardiologist has been watching the regurgitation all my life and it is increasing as I age.  So, I might be needing pulmonary valve replacement in the future.  The best advice I can give is to encourage your daughter to continue going for annual check ups to Children's Hospital or to find an Adult Congenital Heart Clinic.  This has helped me to receive the best care from those who understand my repaired heart.  I am still living a wonderful life and recently became a grandma!  There is so much HOPE for us heart survivors!  I hope this has helped you to feel better.  I know every situation is different, but I do trust the wonderful doctors and nurses that care for those of us with congenital heart defects!

    Take care,

    Tina
