    Hello all,

I am still trying to figure out this forum. My 12 year old daughter is having open heart surgery this week (Tuesday) at Phoenix Children's Hospital. She has an atrial septal defect (SVC and pulmonary vein). She's been a very healthy kid. This is her first surgery, so she's in for a big shock. I would love for her to come in contact with other girls around her age who have had the same thing. Is anyone in Phoenix with a tween/teen heart patient?

    Hi,

I just wanted to send you love and well wishes for the upcoming surgery. My son is 10 and has a CHD as well. You are not alone on this journey and I just wanted you to know that.

Had this surgery when I was six and at 40 ASD and VSD.
Things that help make recovery less painful:
     Sleep on an incline.
Hold a hard pillow to your chest as you get up.
Lots of fresh fruit (aids in soft tissue repair)
Great bread (aids in cartilage and ligament repair)

You got to move around even though it hurts.  At 12 any game would get you moving, even cards.

Best wishes to a speedy and smooth recovery,

    Robin Davis

    Hi Charissa,

I was wondering how your daughter's surgery went. I hope it went well and she is recovering nicely. Let us know if you have a moment!

Thanks for checking in on us! Molly’s surgery went very well (April 2). When the surgeon opened her up, he realized he could make the repair without putting her on bypass! When the nurse came out to tell us Molly did not go on bypass and the surgery was already finishing up, we were totally amazed.

She stayed at Phoenix Children’s Hospital for 7 days, coming home April 8. She is resting at home now. Her first post-op appt is today. I took the suggestions and got a recliner for her to sleep in. That has been very helpful. Her scar is healing well also.

    Charissa,
Sometimes,  sometimes, open heart surgery is not gender-based, but I understand your need for open-heart moms and tweens.
I have had 3 open-hear surgeries, one at nine, one at thirteen and the other in 1976. For aortic stenosis.

First, please let us know how your daughter is doing!

    Hi Clarissa.

My daughter is 12 and she had her open heart surgery when she was 16 days old. She had COA, VSD and ASD. Today, she has no limitations and is in middle school.

I'm happy your daughter's surgery went well.

    Thanks.
    Cynthia
