    So I am only 34 and received open heart surgery to replace my aortic valve and repair the aneurism around my aortic. My surgery was in October 2019 and just wanted to see how long it took others to recover and being able to be active again?? Such as playing sports like volleyball and softball. I have been doing cardiac therapy but I am always on the go doing my athletics that I have had to really slow my world down to heal and recover properly. This has been one of the hardest things I have ever done!!

    I am 50 years old and had triple bypass and an aortic valve replacement 3/2019. What type of valve did you get? I have a onyx mechanical valve. I am trying to find others who choose this valve for support. This is definitely the hardest situation that I've ever dealt with.

    Triple@48 due to an aneurysm in the widow maker. Its taken me 18 months to consistently feel good. I have a physical job+also active. The reason it has taken so long is ive had bad reactions to the meds(fatigue,aches,mentally foggy)physically+mentally it shouldn't have taken this long. Pay attention to your blood work+CK levels. Quicker you get meds right the quicker life goes back to normal. HANG IN THERE

                  I had OHS (valve repair cum bypass) at age 69. It took me about two months before I could exercise for 30 minutes, at which point I knew I was ready for cardio-rehab. I think that course lasted another two-or-three months. During which and since, I've been exercising (cardio-machines, light weights, heavy bag, walking and/or combinations thereof) six days a week for 30 minutes or more. And I feel terrific. It is AMAZING how much better you can get. Stick with it; stay positive; listen to your doctor and don't over-do it. You've got decades of good stuff ahead.

    OHS is the hardest thing I ever did too. Your amazing energy should be coming up in about a month. I think by 6 months I was feeling more myself again. I came on this sight and I think I'm ready to get out of my funk and put the Blues behind me. I've had the Blues and survivors guilt since my surgery in July 2018. Now I don't feel weighted down with restrictions. What you're feeling is real. Validate your feelings and know that this too shall pass. God bless

    Erin, this was four years ago, so I'd love to hear what your answer is now! I'm 46, 7 weeks post-op for an On-X and ascending aorta replacement, and I'm doing well with a few miles of walking or hiking, although sometimes I need a day off of anything but light walking and range of motion. I'm feeling that it will be a while before I can swim well in a swim competition, etc.

    Hi Peter, my name is Lusvy and I'm new to this forum and had my OHS in 2017. Like a lot of the others it took me about 6 months to start to feel at least a little bit like myself again. The hardest part for me was not the surgery, but, my personal struggle with the recovery and feeling like I received my life back. Now in 2025 I have a cardiac surgeon telling me I need another OHS. I've learned recovery is not about the destination but the specific roads you to take to get there. It will not be an easy straight road with all the green lights; and it may include delays, road blocks, construction, and possibly other things you may think of :) but that doesn't mean the drive and travel time is not worth it ! I'm happy to be here and be able to connect with all of you.
