    Raj,
Since coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) is the most common type of open heart surgery, your long-duration post surgery pain is quite unusual. Since you've tried so many other solutions, you may want to consider these two options:
    A. Keep a diary of the incidences of chest pain including date, time of day and any unusual upper body exercise or physical stress.
    B. Schedule a follow up consult with your surgeon to review the diary for any unique patterns or other physiological conditions.
    Best of luck,
    Vic

    Raj,

Several things could be attributed to the pain and discomfort you are experiencing. The sternum takes about one year to heal fully. Are you working out or doing any heavy lifting that might be causing the pain? Do you have a chronic cough or allergies? A competent primary physician should get to the bottom of this, but if you think it's related to your surgery I would seek a second opinion from a cardiologist.

yes Raj, I have constant pain that sounds similar to yours. I am 9+ months out of mitral valve repair. also, it seems my left arm weighs too much as the shoulder will ache a ton after 15-30 min. of it hanging at my side.  i have to carry my arm with the other one for any relief. no one can explain it. i too have tried just about everything. there are two things that seem to help - massage and meditation.  these are temporary but am hopeful it will have cumulative effect. All good wishes Raj

    HI Raj,

I had a CABG x 4 in July 2022 and I've had sternotomy pain ever since. My cardiologist refers to it as "post sternotomy pain syndrome" and other than ruling out heart problems, he doesn't have any suggestions. My pain is minimal buy I am on 600mg of gabapentin daily, and I'm thinking of cutting back. Someone on this page mentioned monitoring your pain and have just begun doing just that.  See what your primary physician has to say once you have an idea and he/she should know where to go from there.  Best of luck.

    Hi Raj,

One last thought and this may or may not be true - supposedly the wires used to keep the sternum in place during recovery are permanent. They could cause issues and are removed in some cases. I'm seeing my primary and cardiologist in about a month and plan on discussing it.
