    Hi everyone,

I had my quads bypass surgery about 8 weeks ago, I am recovering well and able to walk about an hour plus so far, I am 51 yrs old, before this surprising change of event, I was doing 5km light jog and weights, keeping a healthy lifestyle, I've never drink alcohol, smoke or do drugs in my entire life, I was surprised when I learned I had have a heart attack which I think was a regular heartburn 3 weeks prior. That's turn my life upside down a bit, I am grateful that I am still here and looking forward for a normal life again.
I have a bit of numbness in my face which is just random, apart from the numbness around the chest muscle and occasional mild pain, are these normal ? and how long will they usually last?
why do coughing and sneezing still hurt after 8 weeks?
Also, can I incorporate light weights together with cardio?

    Thanks
    John

Hi John. Welcome aboard.  I am a quintuple bypass and heart attack survivor closing in on 3 1/2 years post surgery and am doing great.

I never experienced face numbness but I still do have a little left center side of the chest numbness which never concerned me and I assume is related to having my chest cut open and extracting my left mammary artery for use in the bypass.  The pain when coughing and sneezing is normal within the first 8 weeks after surgery and should soon diminish and go away completely.  If it does't, talk to your doctor.

Your surgeon or cardiologist should be able to tell you when to resume weight training. I was given the all clear at 13 weeks, which I thought was overly cautious of them, but I successfully resumed lifting and haven't looked back.  I am now approaching 71.

Good luck and please keep us posted on your progress.

    Hi there,

    Glad you are feeling better!

After my open heart surgery (repaired mitral valve) all doctors said no weights until 12 weeks.  And yes, it still hurt to cough or sneeze, but holding a pillow against your chest helps.  Also, I experienced a lot of numbness at site of neck IV but not in my face.  Might be best to ask your doctor about that one.

Best wishes to more recovery.  12 weeks is a big milestone to look forward to!

    Best,
    LL

You should ask your cardiologist or PCP those questions, especially the facial numbness.have them review your medications to see if this is a cz.
I'm sorry you have had to experience this especially after living a healthy lifestyle.  Perhaps genetics played a part in all of this. I know now i wasn't living a healthy lifestyle cz i did smoke and had a family history of heart disease.  I've tried changing my life and its been slow..
I really admire you are already walking an 1hr a day in 8wks. I was glad I was able to get up the stairs without passing out. Perhaps bcz you were already active b4 surgery.  Honestly it does get better. But it can be a slow process.
Wishing you all the best in this new chapter of your l8fe.
