  • 1.  Eliquis versus Warfarin - Aortic Heart valve replacement

    Hi Folks,

I am 5 months post op from Open Heart Surgery for Aortic Valve replacement and I am largely back to normal. I chose to go with the mechanical valve because I am in my 40's and it should last the rest of my life versus the bovine valve alternative. Anyway, a lot of Aortic heart valve patients chose not to have the mechanical valve due to having to take Warfarin and the INR testing that goes with it. Well there is potentially some good news down the line. I just enrolled in a clinical trial for Eliquis instead of having to take warfarin. That means no dietary requirements, no INR testing, less bleeding risk. This trial is just for patients that have the On-X valve in the Aortic position.

Thought some folks might be interested to know what is potentially coming down the pike. Note, this clinical trial is just for Aortic Valve replacement patients who got the On-X valve.

    Keep well everyone.

Congratulations Adam on your participation in Eliquis clinical trial! That is great news and will make the mechanical valve more appealing to future patients.  I am six months post op from OHS for aortic valve replacement with the bovine valve and also have been surprised at how quickly my body has come back.    Please keep us posted on the clinical trial ....

Glad you have made a good recovery Kat. I am 5 months out and feeling great. Skiing, playing indoor soccer, etc...I want to put the whole thing behind me but when I look back, the worst part was the anxiety as I waited for the surgery. We all tend to let our mind race and fear the worse. We are lucky that we got diagnosed, had it fixed and will be under a watchful eye going forward. The best of luck to you. keep in touch

Hey Adam,  I am water rowing, spinning and practicing yoga.  I have held off on cycling until one year anniversary.  Want to make sure breast bone is intact in event of bike crash.  Yes, the worst part was the pre-surgery anxiety. I found that research on all things related to aortic valves helped ease the stress.  I wish you continued healing and beneficial results from the trial.
