Hi All!  My name is Millie and I had Open Heart surgery last March. I had a aortic valve & aortic root replacement and now have a mechanical valve in place.  This has been a long journey of ups & downs. I've had to deal with the emotional changes related to fear & anxiety and also the post op symptoms that I still deal with now.  Which I think I didn't expect as I will be coming up on year 2 in March'26. The most uncomfortable is I still have some days where I experience chest pressure & tightness, especially weather/activity related. I also have been experiencing vision related issues since surgery, I have random episodes where my vision becomes blurry and I now wear glasses.  I've had all different tests and scans run to make sure there is nothing that needs to be addressed but everything has come back fine.

My last episode was back in Sept. I'm used to having good and bad days sporadically but this lasted for 7 days straight.  I went to the ER 3x times because the pressure was so intense, they ran all the needed tests- xrays, CT scan and then finally they decided to keep me overnight to do a echo. Everything came back ok. But the feeling was real. Currently I think the most I struggle with is fear every time I have a uncomfortable feeling- I find myself always thinking something is wrong. I'm currently dealing with a mild pressure flare up again.  I just want to feel good again, my goal one day is to run my first 5K.  I'm taking day by day but definitely in need of support of a community that understands. Thanks for listening!

    Hi Millie,

You mentioned a number of tests that you've had, but you didn't mention an angiogram. Has anyone considered whether this chest pressure might be related to something other than your valve replacement surgery, such as a blockage in a coronary artery resulting in angina?

    Good Morning Ira,

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I believe I've had the arteries checked as well. I will keep pressing on, giving myself grace & doing my best to take care of myself. I guess this is part of the journey that was chosen for me! It is nice to have access to a support group.
    Wishing you all the best!

    Millie

    Hi Millie,

My husband had open heart surgery and repair of his aortic valve nearly three years ago and has the same pressure and tightness that you describe almost everyday. We've stopped going to the ER because they never find anything "causing" this horrible sensation.

I suspect that there has to be something at the bottom of this troubling symptom, but nothing comes from reports to his cardiologist about this matter. We're in Maine where doctors are few and far between and hope after we relocate to Houston, Texas this coming June that he will find a cardiologist who will solve the mystery of this chest pressure and tightness.

He also has periods of burping following this symptom that I've researched and apparently is associated with a lack of oxygen (no blockages have been found, a stress test never revealed anything amiss, either) that affects the vagus nerve and a buildup of gas in the stomach, hence the burping/off-gasing.

I'd hoped other members of the Mended Hearts Group had experienced similar problems and had solved this problem so my husband could be pointed in the right direction.

    Good Morning Jane!

First- sending your husband much encouragement. It is very frustrating to have to walk thru these hard physical moments and not have any answers. Texas should definitely have more access to providers that can possibly assist.
I came across an article that referenced Post-Sternotomy Pain Syndrome (PSPS) after looking up some things on it some of the symptoms sound so similar to what I've been experiencing. I plan to talk to my cardiologist about this.  This is a ongoing journey that we are walking through, our bodies have endured something extremely traumatic so there will be moments. And how everyone recovers is different. I have to keep reminding myself of this. So I have to hold on to my faith, take care of the body I'm in now and have grace with myself. And hopefully your husband can do the same! It's great he has you as a support also!!

    Many Blessings,

    Millie

    Millie-
All of us are different. I'm 14 years post my aortic valve repair and, at nearly 84, am doing fine. You seem to be doing all the right things with respect to seeking medical care and hopefully a solution will be found. From your work, you must be therapy savvy, so you must have considered therapy to deal with the emotional component. The fears and stress you have been experiencing must be taking a toll. May you find good feelings this holiday season, in the new year, and with this community.
